About Us

ABC Obedience has been serving the New Haven and Shoreline areas since 1993.   Robi Tatkin, owner and trainer has helped thousands of dogs and their owners in that time, through private sessions as well as group classes.

We are primarily referred through veterinarians and client word of mouth.

In addition to training, running the pet supply store and other administrative duties, "we" also are responsible for the creation and editing of this website.

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

The philospophy at ABC Obedience is a blend of modern motivational techniques with some tried and true traditional methods.  Owners are taught to recognize behavioral cues and reinforce appropriately.  Dogs do not have to be handled harshly to earn respect!  Emphasis is on using logic and communication to get results, not force.  Training should be fun for owner and dog!

We consider dog training a skill and an art.  It combines good instincts with learned skills and adds the ability to show those skills to others.

Our training methods are primarily positve motivation.  We want it to be fun for dogs and owners to learn!  Although we are very effective at behavior interruption when needed, our emphasis is on teaching humans and dogs to focus on what we DO want, rather than on what we don't.

Growing Up Robi

People think I'm kidding when I say I was raised by dogs (unless you've seen my social skills, then you might not question it...).   I grew up in Southern California with 35 Afghan hounds that were raised for conformation dog shows (the kind you see on TV at the Westminister Kennel Club, judged primarily for how they look).   I quickly gravitated towards the obedience rings where people and dogs were judged on their abilities, not appearances.

My first obedience dog was a painfully shy kennel shi-tzu who had never been socialized.  Not only did I train him to the blue place ribbon in our very first competition, but also successfuly acclimated him to other dogs and people.  I was 12 years old at the time. I always knew I would be involved in dog training, but planned on it as a hobby while would work as a psychologist.  After earning my Master's Degree in Psychology, I began part time dog training at the urging of my friends.  The referrals were overwhelming!  Finally, I decided I'd rather teach humans to help their dogs then to teach then to solve their own issues.  Besides, I was tired of trying to like the research needed for a PhD.  Plus,  I get results in one session now!)

The result seems to be everything has come together to create ABC Obedience.  We would not be what we are today without our loyal and amazing clients and friends.
