Why cut dog nails?

Some people think that walking a dog on hard surfaces will be enough to wear down the nails... it helps, but it's not enough.

Inside the dog's nail is a vein called the quick.  Each time the nail is cut, the quick recedes allowing you to get shorter nails as time goes on.  Since the vein gets shorter each time its cut, you cannot make up for months or years of not clipping all in one day.

It is important that your dog is comfortable with having his/her/their paws restrained (not massaged) and nails done.  If your dog is truly problematic with it, we suggest a private session for handling exercises and clipping (which occasionally isn't possible the first time).

Nails that go untrimmed can cause muscular-skeletal difficulties such as splayed paws and walking issues.

Most dogs do excellent with the monthly trim at ABC (and it keeps owners on schedule also).  Hope to see you soon!

NAIL CLIPPING PROTOCOL AT ABC OBEDIENCE

  • First Sunday of each month, will be postponed to the following week if holiday or weather cancellation

  • 11 am to 1 pm. $15 (tips appreciated)

  • First come, first served

  • We appreciate your patience, some cars have more than one dog

  • If you arrive before us, we will brings dog in, starting with the left-most parking space and working right. If you get there after 11 am we will do our best to find who arrived next and hand out numbers. We always appreciate our customers helping keep track for us too!  See picture below

  • We are open for retail from 11 am to 1 pm also. Shoppers are welcome and appreciated

  • Vaccinated, social dogs welcome. Please note this is not the format for dogs with real behavioral issues about their nails. We are available for private appointments, just call. Also consider private training sessions to work on issues and reduce stress.

  • Please bring paper proof of rabies vaccination (good idea to keep picture in your cell)

  • Make sure your dog is on a secure collar with a regular leash (preferably 6 ft). No retractable or chain leashes allowed

  • A happy attitude and high value treats usually make the experience even better

  • If your dog's nails are extra long, keep in mind that the vein inside the nail (called the quick) gets shorter each time you clip, so it needs to be done regularly (you can't make up for months of not doing it all in one day, it takes time to get them short again).

Thanks to all our wonderful nail clipping day participants, new and long-time loyals,
we appreciate your support and your dogs appreciate healthy paws.
